What’s Up Wednesday: February Edition

It’s that time again…our monthly check-in with an edition of What’s Up Wednesday!  Once again, this post will be linked to the Mix & Match Mama, so check out her blog too!wuw

I’ll be answering these questions.wuw-questions

What I’m eating this week…

I’ve trying some new healthy recipes lately…trying to be good.  I’ve made Katrina Bowden’s overnight oats (trying to force myself into liking oatmeal) & her sweet & sour chicken, which is to die for.  I also made Shay’s Mozzarella bake, which I think I’ll make spicier next time.  I love the Chobani flips yogurt, but can’t find my favorite peachy pistachio anymore, so I made my own version.

But, then Girl Scout Cookies happened.  girl-scout-cookies

What I’m reminiscing about…

Not to bring the mood down, but February 16th was the ninth anniversary of my Dad’s death.  It was unexpected, but we did have about 3 days notice.  We buried him on the 18th, which was my parents 25th wedding anniversary.  It was a double whammy for Mama J.  This picture was our last picture together, taken on Christmas Day 2007. dad

What I’m loving…

I’m loving my new hair color & cut!  Thanks to Christina, co-owner of The Beauty Lounge in The Woodlands.  My hair is so thick she & another stylist had to blow it out…talk about being pampered.  I suggested that perhaps I need to get one of those cat brushes that grooms their fur…we laughed for days.  I still think that could work.new-brush

What I’ve been up to…

As per usual, I play BINGO on Tuesdays.  Last night I finally won!  I was so excited!!!  Mike’s hearing is still recovering. bingo-i-won

Little did I know, this would be my winning round.  I won a $5 gift card, which paid for my beer.  Double win!

What I’m dreading…

I’m dreading Lent.  I’m not Catholic, but I like to participate in Lent because I feel it works better for me to give something up, rather than resolving to do something in the new year.  I’ve decided to give up restaurants (I use this term loosely) with a drive-thru.  If I cheat, I have to put that same amount of money in my savings account.  I’m trying break bad habits y’all…

What I’m working on…

I am weaning myself off cokes.  Yes, in Texas all carbonated drinks are called cokes.  I’ve switched exclusively to diet drinks, & allow myself to only have one…then I switch to water.  What can I say…I’m a work-in-progress.

What I’m excited about…

I just got a little trampoline, so I’m super excited to start doing workouts on it…just need to assemble it.trampoline.gif

What I’m watching/reading…

I’ve really been missing The Mindy Project (used to be on Fox, now on Hulu), so I downloaded Hulu & have started over on Season 1.  I forgot how much I love this show!  Also the show follow me on Twitter, so I feel like that is divine intervention or something.tmp

As for reading…I’m currently ready a cheesy romance novel; I’m trying to finish it quickly because it’s too cheesy even for me.

What I’m listening to…

I’ve recently turned back to music for a little bit; I was exclusively podcasting for a few months.  The Sing soundtrack is so fun, & I’ve been reacquainted with Lady Gaga thanks to the Superbowl.

I’ve added a few new podcasts into the mix as well: My Favorite Murder, The Business Bites Podcast, See Something Say Something, Presidential, Side Hustle School, & Dumb, Gay Politics…just to name a few.

What I’m wearing…

Well, since we had 90° weather last week for a couple days, I’m pulling out my warm weather clothes.  Total bummer for me because I LOVE winter.

Back in January I got glasses for the first time.  Lame.  I only need to wear them for screen time, but I am having such a hard time getting used to them.  I’m not sure if the prescription is too strong or if I just don’t wear them enough, but they make me kind of dizzy if I look at anything other than a computer screen…forget trying to walk around – my environment becomes a carnival fun house.  glasses

What I’m doing this weekend…

This weekend I will be babysitting, possibly dog sitting, & I plan to have brunch with my friend Rebecca.  We tend to brunch hop…yea!

What I’m looking forward to next month…

Next month is Spring Break, so I typically avoid travel during that time as I have no kiddos.  However, I will be dog sitting for two of my favorite families, so I’ll have a staycation & enjoy the pool.

What else is new…

Not a lot new this month.  I am now on version 7.0 of drawing out my dream house for when I win the lotto.  I enjoyed a fun Wine Night at a friend’s new house last week.  My friend Brigitte & I went out for Happy Hour, which other than BINGO we rarely do.  This was a precursor to seeing Fifty Sades Darker.  Normally I don’t notice directors, but I thought it was super obvious that this one had a different director than the first movie & it didn’t follow the book as closely, but Christian Grey is still hot AF.

Bonus Question: What is my “can’t live without” beauty product…

Straight out of the shower, I use a leave-in conditioner. I like this leave-in conditioner. You can get it on amazon, at Target, HEB, pretty much anywhere.  It smells like a vacation. Make sure to use a wide tooth comb to evenly distribute throughout your hair.

Until next month…

Post 8: DIY Projects

It’s been a minute since I’ve done one of these posts, partially because nothing major has been going on (this is a good thing) in my life.  I’ve been working on a DIY project that I’ve been waiting to share until it was completed.  Well, the time has come – I finished it yesterday & I have to say I’m pretty proud of myself.  So, without further ado…

Take It: Vertical Gardens

About a year & half ago I pinned some garden ideas on Pinterest, some of which were vertical gardens.  My goal was to beautify my garage wall in my backyard; from my couch I look directly at this wall – it was tan & boring.  I’ve rented this house for 4 years now, & have done lots of things to cutesy it up (especially the curb appeal), & have a constant battle with the yard.  I have tons of things I would do – if I owned the house – but since I rent I don’t want to do anything too permanent, too costly, or something that would ultimately piss off my landlord.  He & his wife are super cool & my rent is so cheap for the area I live in!!!  It was a great find & a cute little “cottage”!

My friend Ruthy brought me a pallet from her husband’s (Paul) work, Karbach Brewery (shout out to some super delicious beer).  The pallet has been sitting in my garage for over a year (I kid you not).  Last weekend, the first weekend in a long time that I haven’t been booked with stuff, I got up at 7am (my attempt at beating the heat – didn’t work) to start working on the garden.  As you can imagine, I had very specific ideas about how I wanted it to look.  If you knew me personally then you would know that I am very particular about most things, but in a good way. 🙂

The pallet needed a few replacement boards & minor repairs, which I did myself.  #dustofftheshoulder  This is what I started with:  Pallet Before

Okay, so I replaced a board, cut down boards (using an old school hand saw) to fit inside the pallet to create “shelves,” sanded the entire thing, primed it, painted it, polyurethane’d it, & added a protective fabric to the back so soil wouldn’t fall out.  Phase 2

Please ignore the poor excuse for grass.  My entire yard is 90% shade 90% of the day, which is great for my utility bills but horrible for growing anything other than moss.  If you have any suggestions please share!  Yesterday, my mission was to complete the garden with shade loving plants.  My favorite are fuchsias, but the season has passed for them (at least in the Houston area).  Whomp, whomp.  After looking high & low yesterday, I found enough plants to fill the pallet & a small flower bed.  Phase 3

I love my vertical garden!!!  It was harder than I thought it would be, I am a novice after all, but didn’t take as long as I thought it would…once I actually started it.  Shout out to the amazing garden lady at Ace Hardware for giving me some Wandering Jew cuttings for free!  The only thing I would change is that ideally I would have mounted the pallet itself to the house.  Once again, I rent so thought it might behoove me to make it less permanent.  The plants you see are succulents, begonias, cyclamen, ferns, Wandering Jew, & a couple others I cant remember.  I’ll eventually add some herbs & what not in there.

Leave It: Lack of Time

Nothing terrible or dramatic is going on in my life – just the way I like it – but I could use some more time.  Can’t we all???  I feel like I’m being pulled in a couple different directions, which I allow so it’s a “me” issue.  I either need a caffeine drip intravenously or more time to myself.  I’m an only child, so I really thrive & value having “me” time.  My goal in the next few months is to commit myself to things a little less.  I used to read 2-3 books a week & now it takes me several weeks to finish 1 book – I’d like to get back to the former.

I have a few other personal projects going on, & once they yield results (one way or the other) I’ll share with y’all.  Thanks for reading & hope y’all enjoyed.
